En anglais, il existe environ 250 verbes irréguliers. Le seul moyen de les connaître est de les apprendre par cœur.

On peut distinguer 4 groupes de verbes irréguliers :
– les verbes irréguliers dont la base verbale, le prétérit et le participe passé sont identiques. (1er groupe)
– les verbes irréguliers dont la base verbale et le participe passé sont identiques. (2ème groupe)
– les verbes irréguliers dont le prétérit et le participe passé sont identiques. (3ème groupe)
– les verbes irréguliers dont toutes les formes sont différentes. (4ème groupe)
